Jehovah Names
Jesus Christ is the image of his Father.
The redemptive names of God are the compound names that go with Yahweh (commonly rendered as “Jehovah”).
People translate and pronounce God’s name, YHVH (יהוה), in many different ways. It comes from a Hebrew word that means “to be” or “to exist.” Shortly before the time of Christ, the idea of avoiding saying or pronouncing (and sometimes writing) the name of God, יהוה, became widespread. It became a strong tradition to pronounce Yahweh as Adonia (Lord).
Later, they took the vowel pointings from Adonai and put them on Yahweh and ended up with Yehovah, which was transliterated as Jehovah. Remember, there is no “J” sound in Hebrew (or Greek or Aramaic).
The names we will talk about are compound names with Yahweh or Jehovah.
Malachi 3:6 KJV:
For I am the LORD [יהוה, Yahweh, Jehovah], I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed.
From the time God first revealed himself with the name Yahweh, He remains the same throughout the entire Bible. Once you know what the name means, it’s the same thereafter. You can rely upon it.
In this session, we’ll cover Jehovah-Jireh (Yahweh-Yireh), Jehovah-Rapha, Jehovah-Kadesh, and Jehovah-Shammah.
Jehovah-Jireh (Yahweh-Yireh)
The Lord who provides.
Genesis 22:1–2:
1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did tempt Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. 2 And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son [only begotten, unique one (miraculous birth)] Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
Mount Moriah was the name of a hill in Jerusalem where Solomon later built the Temple.
2 Chronicles 3:1:
Then Solomon began to build the house of the LORD at Jerusalem in mount Moriah, where the LORD appeared unto David his father, in the place that David had prepared in the threshingfloor of Ornan the Jebusite.
Genesis 22:3–12:
3 And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son, and clave the wood for the burnt offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him. 4 Then on the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men, Abide ye here with the ass; and I and the lad will go yonder and worship, and come again to you. 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took the fire in his hand, and a knife; and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spake unto Abraham his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? 8 And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself [literally “Elohim will see for himself” or “see to it”] a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. 10 And Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his son.
11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and said, Abraham, Abraham: and he said, Here am I. 12 And he said, Lay not thine hand upon the lad, neither do thou any thing unto him: for now I know that thou fearest God, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son, thine only son from me.
Isaac was probably closer to 30 years old when this took place. At 30 he would have been considered an adult and responsible. In other words, Isaac was not a young boy or even a teenager. So, he had to agree to be bound on the altar. Abraham was not only willing to sacrifice his son, but Isaac had to be willing to be sacrificed.

Genesis 22:13–14:
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovahjireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the LORD [יהוה, Yahweh] it shall be seen.
Remember from verse 8, “Elohim will see to it” or “Elohim will provide?” That’s why verse 14 says, “In the mount of the LORD it shall be seen.” In order to provide, you have to see (be aware of) the need.
Hebrews 11:17–19:
17 By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
Romans 4:21–25:
21 And [Abraham] being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.
Romans 5:1–2:
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.
Romans 8:1–4:
1 There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.
Abraham saw a ram caught in a thicket. A ram was a sin offering.
Jehovah-Rapha
The Lord who heals.
After the Israelites crossed the Red Sea.
Exodus 15:23–26:
23 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah. 24 And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink? 25 And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them, 26 And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth [Jehovah-Rapha] thee.
Psalm 147:3:
He healeth the broken in heart, and bindeth up their wounds
Luke 4:18:18–21
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
Romans 8:11:
But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken [give life to] your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
Jehovah-Kadesh
The Lord who sanctifies.
Exodus 31:12–13:
12 And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, 13 Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my sabbaths ye shall keep: for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the LORD that doth sanctify [Jehovah-Kadesh] you.
You can think of sanctify as being consecrated, made holy, set apart for something that causes awe. They were set apart so they could spend time being in awe of God.
God didn’t want to be unapproachable; He wanted children.
1 Corinthians 6:11:
And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.
Jehovah-Shammah
The Lord is there.
Ezekiel 48:35:
It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The LORD is there [Jehovah-Shammah].
Ephesians 2:21–22:
21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: 22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.
