What is a Testimony?
Acts 1:8 KJV:
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
The Aramaic word picture for “witness” is two letters; one means “to see,” and the other means “a door.” Put them together “to see the door.” “To see” carries the idea of experience because what you see with your eye becomes part of your life’s experience. You can think of the two-letter word picture as “to experience life.”
The greatest witness to you, the greatest testimony to you, is something that happens to you in your life. You experience it. You then have a first-hand understanding of it. If you tell someone else’s testimony, it is not the same as if you tell your own testimony.
We’re witnesses of what God has done for us. Hebrews 11, the great cloud of witnesses, provides a great example of what it means to be a witness.
Hebrews 11:4 KJV:
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh.
A witness can also be told in a song, like the song of Moses after they crossed the Red Sea. A song can be a form of testimony. God had Joshua place a pile of stones in the Jordan River so that when the water returned, that pile of stones would be visible in the middle of the river. The pile of stones was a witness or a testimony.
Psalm 89:37 KJV:
It shall be established for ever as the moon, and as a faithful witness in heaven. Selah.
The dependable rising and setting of the sun and moon is a testimony to God’s faithfulness.
Speaking in Tongues is a witness or testimony to ourselves.
1 John 5:9–10a KJV:
9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater: for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son.
10 He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself:
Romans 8:16 KJV:
The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
