The Promises of God are Yes and Amen
Passion Translation of 2 Corinthians 1:20:
“For all of God’s promises find their “yes” of fulfillment in him. And as his “yes” and our “amen” ascend to God, we bring him glory!”
All of God’s promises are assured in Christ and when we echo our affirmation to what God has said, it brings God the glory. He is the guarantor of the promise and the fulfillment of it. There are 2 Aramaic words for promise. The first is mulkana, which comes from melak, and means “to make an arbitrary declaration from an absolute owner.” God’s promise to Abraham of the land is such a promise. The second word is shudaya, an intensive form of yada, which means “to praise, give thanks, confess” and the emphasis in this noun is on the fulfillment. It is used in Acts 1:4 of the giving of the Spirit on the day of Pentecost. Both words are used in a passage in Hebrews 6 which has four keys to receiving God’s promises:
1. v. 12 — do not be discouraged (like Joshua, meditate on the Word and make it your own)
2. v. 13 — have faith: pour strong water on the seed. Promises are like seeds. Get your heart and mouth lined up and become a master gardener.
3. v. 15 — be long-suffering, continue to be asking, seeking, knocking God is not able to lie. If He spoke it, it is guaranteed to come to pass.
4. v. 18-20 — go in the sanctuary into God’s promise and abide within the veil.
